| 内容記述 | Three English translations of Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro,written in 1914,have been published:the first by Ineko Sato in 1941,a second by Edwin McClellan in 1957,and the most recent by Meredith McKinney in 2010. This paper looks at McKinney’s translation and discusses how sentences that contain cultural background unique to Japan are treated in translation. Different communication styles resulting from differences in the cultural background between the Japanese and English languages are apparent in a variety of situations, but this paper focuses specifically on passages where a nuance in the Japanese original is translated into English in a entirely different form, and explores the background of these cases. | |||||
