As the concentration of FTSM and/or chemical crosslinker (N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide) increased, the swelling degree at equilibrium decreased, while the gels became more elastic but more brittle. The gels synthesized in a thin glass capillary showed unilateral orientation of the optical axis over whole the gel domain (several cm)due to concentrically aligned nanosheets in the cylindrical gel. Birefringence index △n increased as the nanosheet concentration increased. The diameter of the capillary and the lateral size of the nanosheets also affected △n. Due to the anisotropy in the structure of the hybrid gels,the gels also showed anisotropy in thermally-induced volume phase transition at around 34℃ upon increasing the temperature.
