| 内容記述 | This paper is concerned with cross-linguistic variation and diachronic change of (null-) complementizers in the embedded clauses, deriving the distributional properties from interaction among universal constraints in Optimality Theory (OT) that we will be proposing below and their hierarchy. One constraint is the constraint HEAD that requires overt elements in the head position. Another constraint is the constraint PARSE concerning parsing. The other constraint is the constraint MOVE that requires economy of movement. English had the constraint hierarchy HEAD≫PARSE≫MOVE prior to the late 16th century, but resulted in the constraint hierarchy PARSE≫MOVE≫HEAD in the period by virtue of constraint demotion of HEAD to the lowest stratum. A causal relationship between the beginning of introduction of null-that in the embedded clauses and the demise of doubly-filled COMP and the sequences of that-trace is explained as a consequence of this reranking. The constraint hierarchy HEAD≫PARSE≫MOVE is held in variants of English and the Germanic languages except Standard English and High German (Standard German), and thus doubly-filled COMP and that-trace effect are allowed in these languages. | |||||
