The functional categories in the left peripheral area of the cartography have their own discourse function. Force in the left peripheral field activates as force marker. However, this paper shows that Fin in the left peripheral field can operate as force marker and a verb moves up to there due to the force specification. It has been argued that V2 is related to feature specification in C (e.g.＋F) and V-to-T movement is dependent on richness of inflection and tense. The framework presented here provides a straightforward account of V1, V2 phenomena in Germanic languages. English shows cyclic demise of V-to-C and V-to-T movement in its history.
