| 内容記述 | Aim of this paper is to provide a straightforward account for the demise of obligatory introduc-tion of the complementizer that in the late 16th century. A cross-linguistic study reveals that the com-plementizer that undergoes a T-to-C movement. Such movement is ascribed to the existence of EPP feature in the head of CP and the distribution of that and null-that bears on the EPP feature. The EPP feature was obligatorily introduced in the head of CP up to the late 16th century. Owing to the rich in-flectional system of IP and the specification of the EPP feature in the head of IP, the EPP feature per-colated up to the head of CP and it induced a T-to-C movement of that. Loss of the rich inflectional system in the late 16th century caused the percolation of the EPP feature from the head of IP to die out, which yielded the advent of null-that. | |||||
