This integrated manner of ocean management was proposed by the Agenda 21 in its Chapter 17. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), a milestone doc-ument of the Earth Summit, introduced the Integrated Marine and Coastal Area Management (IMCAM), as a thematic area for conservation and sustainable use of the marine and coastal biological diversity, in its decision II/10 of the Conference of the Parties (COP). The subse-quent arguments within the Subsidiary Bodies on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTAs) and the COPs stimulate the development of IMCAM.
