| 内容記述 | This study examines whether cross-linguistic interaction (CLI) influences the production of Japanese stop consonants by Korean-Japanese (KJ) and Mandarin-Japanese (MJ) bilinguals, both of whom are bilinguals with two first languages (2L1 bilinguals). Specifically, it explores whether Voice Onset Time (VOT) and fundamental frequency at the vowel onset following a stop (f0) are acoustic cues in distinguishing the two series of stops in Japanese. Initially, it was hypothesized that the KJ group would rely on both VOT and f0, while the MJ group would depend solely on VOT, in line with the distinct stop systems in Korean and Mandarin. However, the present study reveals that both groups utilized both VOT and f0 in a similar manner to differentiate Japanese stops, challenging the hypothesis of strong CLI. Instead, the results suggest that the efficiency of distinguishing stops between the two first languages of a 2L1 bilingual plays a more crucial role. Both the KJ and MJ groups appeared to have exaggerated the durational differences between Japanese voiceless and voiced stops, likely as an approach to distinguishing between their two first languages. This study highlights that while the stop systems in Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese differ, both KJ and MJ 2L1 bilinguals have approached stop differentiation in similar ways. While CLI cannot be entirely ruled out in 2L1 bilingual speech production, the findings emphasize the potential importance of efficiency in language processing for 2L1 bilinguals. | |||||||||
