| 内容記述 | Since the proposal of the trichotomy of the world’s languages into mora-timed, stress-timed, and syllable-timed, there has been ongoing debate concerning whether the trichotomy is strict or gradient. This paper takes a different approach: instead of focusing on those well-researched languages, it examines an understudied language Teop, a member of the Oceanic language family. Teop is spoken in the northeastern region of Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea. The paper also focuses only on the rhythmic metrics VarcoΔV and vocalic nPVI to guarantee reliable results since they have been generally recognized as discriminative in previous studies. Teop has intermediate results between stress-timed and syllable-timed languages both in terms of VarcoΔV and vocalic nPVI. This demonstrates that Teop belongs to a rhythm type somewhere between stress-timed and syllable-timed rhythms. Statistical analysis results further confirm the validity of this conclusion, challenging the strict trichotomy. | |||||||
